Westport House is nestled among Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick and the Atlantic Ocean making it the perfect destination for a coastal getaway or a day of fun with the family. Whether you are a nature lover, a history buff or simply looking to occupy the kids for an afternoon, Westport House has something for you, not to mention the fact that Westport town is renowned for its hospitality and warmth.
The home of Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen, Westport House dates back to the 1500s and is a must-visit destination if you are in the area.
We were very fortunate that our invitation included tickets to Westport House and Pirate Adventure Park, the Westport Estate Gardens Tour, a swim at Hotel Westport and Pizza and drinks at Gracey’s Pizzeria & Bistro on the grounds of Westport House.
From start to finish, we had an amazing day! We arrived at lunchtime so naturally our first stop was Gracey’s to fuel up for the day ahead, after all full bellies make for happier children! Our pizzas were delicious, we all cleared out plates. There is nothing quite like a fresh stonebaked pizza!
Once we were fed, we set off to explore! Our first destination was a self guided tour around Westport House itself. I love self-guided especially with kids as it feels less restricted and the kids don’t feel like they have to stay silent the whole way around. They had a real interest in the house, asked loads of questions, especially about the dungeon!
The grounds and gardens are beautiful and extremely relaxing; there is nothing quite like a bit of fresh air to reset you and if you want to see the environment from a slightly different perspective you can take a trip on a Swan Pedalo (a big hit with all of us) or take a ride on the train for a quick look around the grounds.
For the younger visitors, the Pirate Adventure Park is perfect especially if you are feeling a bit adventurous! You can take advantage of the Cannonball Run slide or Pirate Queen Swinging Ship but the Pirates Plunge Flume Ride was a big hit with Aiden and Ella!
Unfortunately, we spent so long enjoying the House and Gardens, we never got a chance to visit Hotel Westport for a swim but we will certainly be back very soon for a stay in the hotel and Westport House will be top of our list for activities. We may even make our visit coincide with the upcoming Pop-Up Restaurant with Chef Aine Maguire which will bring Georgian flavours to a whole new audience!
So what’s the verdict?
We were unlucky that the weather was a bit dull and overcast and that some of the activities were unavailable on the day (Inflatable Obstacle Course and the new Kidz Kars) but that didn’t dampen our spirits! I think these faces sum it up nicely!
I was invited to enjoy Westport House and Hotel Westport with no obligation for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
